• 1.0 out of 5 stars from Peter F May -- A terrible edition! : My wife was reading a library copy. I prefer, for reasons connected to my failing eyesight, Kindle. She was enjoying the book and I was slogging through what seemed like a bad translation! At some point we compared text, paragraph by paragraph and found they are not at all alike! Be prepared, also, for twists and turns and that slam you feel when you thought you knew what was going on and had it all figured out and you got the rug pulled out from under you! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from CrystalM -- Excellent and intriguing story with rich characters : I struggled to begin this novel. In fact, I started it and gave it up within the first 50 pages two or three times over the course of as many years because I felt it was prosey and boring. After hearing yet another person rave about this book, I determined to slog through it. Reading about two pages beyond where I’d always given up before, I was hooked. The story was intriguing and well written. I greatly enjoyed this book. I think it enjoys the rare privilege of being a book with little that is unnecessary to the story, rich characters who all play a significant role- even when they only seem to be a minor character in the moment, and a thousand strings that all tie together in the end. A lot of mysteries tell you what happened and you slowly discover how it was done as you unravel the mystery of who did it. This story tells you immediately who did what, but you spend the rest of the time discovering how they did it and what, exactly, they did. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2019 )

Roberts -- A Landmark Literary Classic in Mystery : It is easy to understand why Wilkie Collins’ book has never been out of print since 1859 once you plunge into its spectacle. Victorian England serves as the setting. A drawing teacher is hired to tutor two affluent sisters. He forms a romantic attachment to the younger of the two and learns later to his chagrin that she is supposed to marry a man she doesn’t love. Collins shows the fragile nature of women in a male-dominated world. In this instance, the novel resembles a Jane Austin soap opera. The heroine is truly a damsel-in-distress. Her father wanted her to marry the despicable Percival Glyde, and she abides by his decision. Sir Percival strips Lady Glyde of all her financial worth to pay off his gambling debts. Collins created a first-class jackal of a villain with Sir Percival. The ultimate villain is the Italian born Count Fosco. Rotund Sidney Greenstreet played the role in the Warner Brothers adaptation. All of Collins’ characters stand out, even the viper-like Madame Fosco. Laura Glyde suffers heavily under a yoke of oppression when she balks at paying Sir Percival’s bills. Secrets play an important part in this sprawling novel. The villains are detestable and they suffer grievously for their conspiracy. One dies in a burning church, with the other is stabbed to death in the chest. Fortune favors the woebegone hero and heroines. The description of Sir Percival’s demise is stirring stuff. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Niki E. -- a must read : This was my first Wilkie Collins book and I absolutely loved it! The characters are fun and engaging and so is the story. Originally published in serial form, I can see where this would have kept readers hankering for the next edition. I really enjoyed the narratives from a variety of characters with each contributing what they know to carry the story along. It was considered one of the first sensation novels. Wilkie Collins was quite a skilled author. He was able to keep the reader in the dark, doling out just bits and pieces here and there, enough to keep one wondering what would happen next and not giving too much away until the end. I looked forward to my reading sessions with guilty pleasure and set a new kindle record for slow reading. After all, this was a book with rich characters and plentiful intrigue. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mark and Margaret -- The movie can wait for "The Woman in White" : "The Woman in White" is a must for mystery lovers. I've read this captivating novel three times over a period of 47 years, starting as a freshman in college while taking an elective course covering the subject of detective fiction. This book abounds with intricate details masterfully intertwined and the characters are strong and engaging, including the less savory ones. I keep coming back to this story because something happens to trigger my memory of it (this time it was Andrew Klavan's "The Great Good Thing" which I also recommend) and then I can't recall how it all rolls out to the end so I have to satisfy my curiosity...again. I like literature in the vein of Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters; settings of other times, social manners and a style of writing that bends my mind just a bit to challenge my routine way of reflecting on what I'm reading. Two movies have been made of this novel (in 1948 and 1997), but I have not seen them yet. To not spoil the joy of slowly unraveling this delicious mystery, I highly recommend reading the novel before seeing a movie of it. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2017 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from billie -- riveting story : This is a stunning book. I first read this in my late teens and was riveted. It was just as good this time. It is set in Victorian times and centres around a young man called Walter who goes to a large country house to teach two sisters to draw. He falls madly in love with one of them and it all goes downhill from there as he, Laura and her sister, Marian become the victims of an evil plan to deprive Laura of her inheritance and her life. The plot is really complex and the writing is literary so if you like a good fast thriller, this book is not for you. On the other hand, if you want a great story, beautifully written that will keep you going on a long journey or a visit to family, do read this. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 3, 2018 )
• 3.0 out of 5 stars from Heather B -- Didn't Love it, Didn't Hate it : I have rather mixed feelings about this book as there were bits that I really enjoyed, bits that I thought dragged, and bits, because of their sinister nature, that I actually found quite stressful to read. I’d had the book on my Kindle for a while and when I started reading it, I didn’t realise how long it was. To be honest, I was quite glad to reach the end. Having said that, as I mentioned, there were bits that I enjoyed. I think that it really depended which characters were involved and who the narrator at the time was. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from M. Dowden -- Always Popular : Penned by Wilkie Collins ‘The King of Sensation’ this is his best novel, and arguably the best sensation novel ever written. With greater literacy in this country and the public’s desire of reading about crime, sensation fiction, which is really an offshoot of gothic fiction, was the sub-genre that really caught people’s imaginations. With coincidences, lurid crimes such as bigamy and adultery amongst others, these stories were full of melodrama and people’s real fears, all set in more normal settings. This story here is told in a multiple narrative form as the tale is progressed by different characters. So although we start and finish with Walter Hartright we have others to fill in the gap between his departure from these shores, and his eventual return.
